Every March, thousands of hipsters flock to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas and this year there will be roaming WiFi stations. Festival goers can pay $2 for 15 minutes of internet use. The best part? The WiFi stations are homeless people. Yes, homeless people. A company called Bartle, Boogle and Hegarty has paid 13 homeless people $20 each to become human WiFi stations. Many are describing this marketing attempt as crass for objectifying and dehumanizing homeless people. I 100% agree. However, I also think this move is too ironic not to be hilarious. We have an event where a bunch of rich people dress like homeless people and pay ACTUAL homeless people to facilitate the luxurious lifestyle they are accustomed to. C'mon how else will we see pictures of tie-dye silk AllSaints pants?
Just be careful not to give your 4G Hotspot too much booze, otherwise I have a feeling your server might be down for a while. (Too soon?)
